Donald Glover has just dropped an exciting update on the long-anticipated Community movie, more than a year after it was first revealed. The multi-talented actor and musician, speaking at the New York premiere of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, shared the news that not only is the project still in the works, but the script has been finalized.
In a chat with ET’s Rachel Smith, the 40-year-old actor disclosed that he got word the script was completed. While he hasn’t had the chance to read it yet, Glover expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It’s really just a schedule thing [but] I’m in. I’m all in.”
Peacock officially announced the Community movie in September 2022, almost a decade after fans rallied for a film to bring closure to the beloved comedy series. The movie is slated to bring back the original cast, including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong, under the guidance of creator Dan Harmon. Peacock has also secured the full Community series library for its streaming service.
The iconic phrase “six seasons and a movie” that originated in Community’s early seasons has now become a fervent fan movement. Susan Rovner, Chairman of Entertainment Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, expressed gratitude for delivering the promised movie to fans 15 years later. She is eagerly looking forward to collaborating with the team to continue the epic comedy for Peacock audiences.
Interestingly, it was Donald Glover who pitched the idea of a Community movie during the cast’s virtual reunion table read in May 2020, marking his return to the show since departing in season 5.
While waiting for the Community movie, fans can catch Glover in action as John Smith alongside co-star Maya Erskine in Prime Video’s reimagining of the 2005 action comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The updated series introduces a contemporary twist, following two new agents pretending to be a married couple working undercover, providing a modern spin on the original film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
