Edgar Wright is known for his love of discussing his favorite movies and showering praise on recent films. His latest Twitter post on May 7 was no exception, as he shared his excitement about George Miller’s upcoming film, “Furiosa.”
Set to premiere at Cannes before hitting theaters on May 24, “Furiosa” faces the daunting task of following up “Mad Max: Fury Road,” one of the most acclaimed action movies of recent times. But according to Wright, Miller has succeeded by avoiding the temptation to repeat himself.
In Wright’s view, Miller has hit the mark with “Furiosa.” While “Fury Road” was a chase epic, “Furiosa” takes on the theme of revenge, showcasing Miller’s versatility as a filmmaker.
Despite his own understanding of the filmmaking process, Wright remains astounded by Miller’s ability to create such intricate and immersive films. Having had the privilege of seeing “Furiosa” a month before its release, Wright continues to be amazed by the level of detail and craftsmanship evident in Miller’s work.
Wright draws parallels between “Furiosa” and classic revenge films like “Ben-Hur,” noting how the long build-up to vengeance pays off in a satisfying manner. He describes the experience of watching the film as both inspiring and envy-inducing, marveling at Miller’s ability to execute complex set pieces with apparent ease.
Interestingly, Wright played a role in casting Anya Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa in the film. After recommending her to Miller during a dinner meeting in London, Miller decided to cast Taylor-Joy rather than relying on CGI de-aging for Charlize Theron’s character. Wright expresses his excitement to see the results of Miller’s decision, describing the journey as an enjoyable ride for audiences.
