During the announcement of its 2024-25 TV season lineup, CBS made an early move for the following season as well.
The network has officially given the green light to “Sheriff Country,” a spinoff of its sophomore drama “Fire Country.” Morena Baccarin, known for her roles in “Deadpool” and “Gotham,” will lead the series, reprising her character introduced in an April episode of “Fire Country” that set the stage for the spinoff.
However, “Sheriff Country” won’t hit screens until the 2025-26 season. CBS Entertainment president shared with reporters on Thursday that the additional time will allow the network to ensure the show’s quality.
“At CBS, we focus on long-term development now,” Reisenbach explained. “Having an extra year gives us ample time for casting and production planning. It’s a significant opportunity for us and aligns with the type of development we aim for.”
For the 2024-25 season, CBS has also lined up three new dramas: a revamped version of “Matlock” featuring Kathy Bates, an “NCIS” prequel titled “Origins,” and a medical drama named “Watson” starring Morris Chestnut.
In “Sheriff Country,” Baccarin portrays Mickey Fox, the stepsister of Diane Farr’s character from “Fire Country,” Sharon Leone. Mickey is tasked with investigating criminal activity and maintaining order in the small town of Edgewater, all while grappling with challenges posed by her ex-convict father and a mysterious incident involving her rebellious daughter.
CBS Studios is set to produce the series, with “Fire Country” co-creators Tony Phelan and Joan Rater penning the premiere episode based on a story by Phelan, Rater, and co-creator and star Max Thieriot. Phelan, Rater, Thieriot, along with Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed of Jerry Bruckheimer Television, will serve as executive producers.
