In a recent speech at the Milken Institute Global Conference, New York Governor Kathy Hochul sparked controversy with an offhand remark about Black children in the Bronx not knowing what a computer is. The comment drew swift criticism from various quarters, including Bronx Assemblywoman Amanda Septimo, who labeled it as “harmful” and “deeply misinformed.”
Following the backlash, Hochul clarified her statement, expressing regret for misspeaking and emphasizing that her intention was to highlight the disparities in access to technology faced by communities of color. She underscored her commitment to addressing economic inequality and ensuring equal opportunities for all New Yorkers.
State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, representing the Bronx, defended Hochul, acknowledging that while her words were insensitive, he believed her genuine desire was to support the educational advancement of all students.
