As Vladimir Putin was sworn in for his fifth term as Russia’s president, the notable absence of several world leaders marked the event. Despite drawing a few familiar faces, including American actor Steve Seagal, who lauded Putin as the “world’s greatest leader,” the ceremony was notably snubbed by key figures from the U.S. and other nations.
Putin’s latest term solidifies his position as Russia’s longest-serving leader since Catherine the Great, a fact highlighting his enduring influence. However, amidst ongoing global concerns, particularly regarding Russia’s actions in Ukraine, many world leaders opted out of attending the inauguration.
In his address, Putin criticized what he perceived as Western aggression towards Russia, underscoring the need for a shift towards cooperation and peace. This sentiment was echoed by some European Union member states, though notable absences remained, including the U.S. ambassador to Russia.
Among those present were trusted allies of Putin, such as Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who has actively supported Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine. Additionally, Russian singer Yaroslav Dronov, known as SHAMAN, and composer Aleksandra Pakhmutova added to the ceremony’s atmosphere.
While the event proceeded with key Russian officials and a small gathering, the absence of prominent international figures underscored the ongoing tensions and divisions on the global stage. Putin’s aide, Yury Ushakov, dismissed the absences, suggesting they may have simply forgotten their diplomatic responsibilities.
