MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Following a shooting involving a Milwaukee police officer and an incident of harassment targeting a street vendor during a Cinco de Mayo celebration, Milwaukee County officials are taking a closer look at park safety. These recent events have raised concerns just as the city and county prepare for a busy summer season.
Milwaukee County Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez, representing District 12, stated that he’s focused on preventing crime by encouraging community involvement. At a press conference in front of the Mitchell Park Domes, Martinez and community activists outlined plans to enhance safety for street vendors in county parks.
One of the proposed solutions is to designate specific areas within parks where vendors can operate safely. “It’s about providing a space in the parks where they can set up and sell without fear,” said Martinez. He also emphasized that organizing more community events could help keep parks safer.
“When we can sponsor events as a county and centralize those celebrations, we can maintain a family-friendly atmosphere instead of having a free-for-all,” explained Martinez.
Martinez believes that creating a safe environment in the parks will require community participation. “It’s not just about me as an elected official. I can talk about it and draft legislation, but I need the community to step in and make use of these parks,” he said.
Additionally, a hotline has been set up for street vendors who might need assistance. If they’re in trouble, they can call 414-539-1036 for help.
