At a recent Republican primary debate in Fort Lupton, the straw poll results took many by surprise, especially regarding U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert’s performance. Despite her prominent status, she ended up in fifth place with just over 10% of the vote, trailing behind several other candidates.
The debate, which garnered national attention, came shortly after Boebert entered the crowded GOP primary race in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, covering the Eastern Plains and suburban Douglas County.
Out of 117 votes cast, Logan County Commissioner Jerry Sonnenberg led the straw poll with 22 votes, followed closely by former House Minority Leader Mike Lynch with 20 votes. Boebert’s 12 votes placed her ahead of former congressional nominee Peter Yu.
The event attracted a full house, including local officials, party members, and supporters. However, organizer Tammy Klein expressed disappointment at the voter turnout for the straw poll.
Additionally, the debate featured Republicans competing for the nomination in the 8th Congressional District, where State Rep. Gabe Evans emerged as the frontrunner in the straw poll, receiving 60% of the vote.
While some candidates bought blocks of tickets, there was no evidence of any campaign attempting to stack the event with supporters. Klein emphasized the dedication of attendees, many of whom traveled significant distances to participate.
Overall, Boebert’s unexpected placement in the straw poll indicates a competitive primary race ahead in Colorado’s congressional districts.
