Apple is reportedly considering a new feature that would allow iPhone users to send their devices in for repair without having to disable Find My and Activation Lock. The fourth iOS 17.5 beta hints at the introduction of a “Repair State” mode, which would maintain anti-theft measures while the iPhone is undergoing repair.
Currently, Apple and authorized repair providers typically require users to turn off Find My during repairs to prevent unauthorized service. However, with the introduction of Stolen Device Protection, this process became more cumbersome, as enabling this feature could result in a one-hour delay before certain actions, like disabling Find My, could be performed.
The proposed Repair State option aims to simplify this process. It would allow users to confirm their device’s repair by entering their Apple ID and password, while still allowing them to track their phone from other devices. When enabled, the Find My app would display the device as “Ready for Repair,” reassuring users that the device remains fully functional during the repair process.
