Iowa City teen designs Herky statue inspired by family memories.

“Herky on Parade: Celebrating Art, Community, and Young Talent in Iowa City”

The vibrant streets of Johnson County were adorned with a kaleidoscope of colors and creativity as the highly anticipated Herky on Parade event unfolded once again. This cherished tradition, which has graced the community every decade since its inception in 2004, returned in 2024 with an unprecedented display of artistic prowess and community spirit. Spearheaded by Think Iowa City, the event saw the unveiling of 100 unique Herky the Hawk statues, each a testament to the boundless imagination and talent of local artists.

This year’s Herky on Parade witnessed an unprecedented surge in participation, with over 260 designs submitted by 150 artists eager to leave their mark on this beloved tradition. The selection process was undoubtedly challenging, yet it resulted in a diverse array of designs that promised to captivate and inspire visitors from near and far. Notably, the final exhibition boasted 25 more statues than previous years, a testament to the growing popularity and significance of the event within the community.

Among the myriad of designs, one particularly remarkable story emerged—the tale of 13-year-old Archie Damschen, whose National Park-themed Herky captured hearts and imaginations alike. Inspired by family trips to the great outdoors, Archie’s passion for art and nature converged in a stunning display of creativity. His selection as the youngest solo artist to decorate a Herky statue not only speaks volumes about his talent but also underscores the event’s commitment to nurturing young artistic voices.

Archie’s humility in the face of such recognition is a testament to his genuine love for art and his desire to share his creations with others. When asked about the message behind his statue, his response—”A 13-year-old did this?”—encapsulates the surprise and admiration his talent evokes, reminding us all of the limitless potential of youth.

As the summer unfolds, the streets of Johnson County will be alive with the buzz of visitors eager to explore the enchanting world of Herky on Parade. From whimsical designs to thought-provoking masterpieces, each statue serves as a testament to the power of art to unite, inspire, and delight people of all ages. Through events like these, communities come together to celebrate creativity, foster a sense of belonging, and cultivate the next generation of artistic talent.
