Well, it’s been quite the nail-biter at the box office this weekend, with Paramount’s “Mean Girls” musical and Amazon MGM’s “The Beekeeper” duking it out for the top spot.
According to Amazon MGM, “The Beekeeper” pulled ahead with $7.4 million from over 3,000 theaters in its third weekend, while Paramount’s “Mean Girls” musical is hot on its heels, raking in $7.3 million from a slightly larger number of venues. It’s so close that the final winner won’t be declared until Monday, especially with football distracting some potential moviegoers on Sunday.
But overall, it’s been a bit of a slow stretch at the movies lately, with no major releases for two weeks running. Things are looking up though, with “Argylle,” “Madame Web,” and “Bob Marley: One Love” all set to hit theaters soon, and everyone’s eagerly awaiting the arrival of “Dune: Part Two” in March.
Paramount’s decision to bring “Mean Girls” back to the big screen instead of streaming it has paid off nicely, netting them over $60 million in North America alone. “The Beekeeper,” starring Jason Statham, is also holding its own, pulling in $41.6 million domestically and hitting $100 million worldwide.
As for the rest of the box office, it’s pretty much business as usual. “Wonka” is still going strong, “Migration” is flying high, and “Anyone But You” is still charming audiences.
The Oscar nominations have given a boost to some lesser-known films like “Poor Things,” “American Fiction,” and “The Zone of Interest.” “Poor Things” saw a nice bump in ticket sales after scoring 11 nods, while “American Fiction” and “The Zone of Interest” are holding their own in limited release.
Overall, while things might be a bit slow at the box office right now, there’s plenty to look forward to in the coming months as the industry starts to pick up steam again.
