Kristen Stewart has returned to the vampire world after more than 15 years since her breakout role in “Twilight.” The Oscar-nominated actress is set to star opposite fellow Academy Award nominee Oscar Isaac in Panos Cosmatos’ highly anticipated film, “Flesh of the Gods.” This ’80s-set vampire rave drama sees the “Mandy” director team up with “Se7en” screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker.
The story follows married couple Raoul (played by Isaac) and Alex (played by Stewart) as they venture out each night from their upscale condo into the vibrant nightlife of 1980s Los Angeles. Their encounter with a mysterious woman and her wild group leads them into a world of glamour, surrealism, and danger.
Describing the film, Cosmatos speaks of it existing in the space between fantasy and nightmare, promising a thrilling and hypnotic journey into the dark heart of Los Angeles. “Flesh of the Gods” will be produced by Adam McKay and Betsy Koch through Hyperobject Industries, with Isaac and his partner Gena Konstantinakos producing under Mad Gene Media. Sales for the film will be handled domestically by CAA and WME, and internationally by XYZ Films at the 2024 Marché du Film in Cannes.
Production is set to kick off later this year. This project marks the third collaboration between Cosmatos and XYZ, with another film titled “Nekrokosm” in the works with A24. Cosmatos, known for his work on “Mandy” with Nicolas Cage, emphasizes the importance of creative control in his collaborations with XYZ to preserve the essence of indie filmmaking.
Stewart, echoing a similar sentiment, has chosen to steer clear of big-budget franchises like Marvel. She is gearing up for her directorial debut with the adaptation of “The Chronology of Water” and has been busy with projects like “Love Lies Bleeding,” “Love Me,” and “Sacramento,” all set to make waves in the industry. Reflecting on her directorial venture, Stewart has expressed the intense and challenging nature of the experience, as well as her upcoming work on a stoner comedy.
