Microsoft has announced a $2.2 billion investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in Malaysia, marking another step in the country’s digital transformation journey. This commitment follows similar pledges made in Indonesia and Thailand by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during his recent visit to Southeast Asia.
As part of this investment, Microsoft plans to establish an AI Centre of Excellence and provide education and training to 200,000 individuals in Malaysia. Nadella expressed Microsoft’s dedication to supporting Malaysia’s AI transformation, ensuring that it benefits all Malaysians. He emphasized the importance of digital infrastructure and skill development in driving inclusive economic growth and innovation across the country.
Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, welcomed the investment, highlighting the deep partnership between Malaysia and Microsoft. He emphasized Malaysia’s growing recognition as a tech investment hub, citing its well-established semiconductor ecosystem. Aziz believes that Microsoft’s investments in cloud and AI infrastructure, along with skilling opportunities, will significantly enhance Malaysia’s digital capabilities and elevate its position in the global tech landscape. He also expressed optimism about creating more opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and generating higher-paying jobs for Malaysians.
Nadella’s announcement in Malaysia follows similar multibillion-dollar investments made in Indonesia and Thailand earlier in the week. Global consulting firm Kearney has estimated that AI could contribute nearly $1 trillion to Southeast Asia’s GDP by 2030, underscoring the region’s potential for technological advancement. Microsoft’s initiatives align with its broader goal of supporting AI development worldwide, as evidenced by recent investments in Japan and partnerships with firms like G42 in the United Arab Emirates.
