Other teams lined up if the Trail Blazers move on from Chauncey Billups as coach.

Chauncey Billups, currently under contract as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers for one more year, is facing uncertainty about his future with the team despite General Manager Joe Cronin’s assertion that Billups will be back next season. Cronin emphasized Billups’ positive influence, stating, “His personality is thoroughly felt throughout this building.”

However, recent moves by the Blazers, including the dismissal of several assistant coaches, have fueled speculation about Billups’ job security. Among those let go were Billups’ brother Rodney and former NBA head coach Scott Brooks. In a recent exit interview, while Cronin focused on player development as the team’s priority, Billups stated, “All I care about is winning,” expressing a desire to start winning immediately.

Despite the uncertainty, Billups is likely to attract interest from other teams if he and the Trail Blazers part ways, according to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated. His record since taking over in Portland stands at 81-165, with a challenging 21-61 in the past season. However, the team’s struggles have been influenced by injuries, notably when they had Damian Lillard, and the current rebuilding phase with young talents like Anfernee Simons and Scoot Henderson.

The key question is whether Billups is the right coach to lead Portland through this rebuild. Cronin’s reluctance to offer Billups a contract extension leaves him as a lame-duck coach, which has previously led to coaching changes in similar scenarios.

Meanwhile, other NBA teams are on the lookout for new head coaches, with Charlotte, Washington, and the Los Angeles Lakers currently in the market. There’s also speculation that Frank Vogel’s position with the Phoenix Suns might be at risk, though that decision is still pending.

Billups will need to consider whether he’s willing to take on another rebuilding project with the Hornets or Wizards or if he’s interested in more established teams like the Lakers (and possibly the Suns). The latter could offer a more competitive roster but may come with high expectations, given the presence of an all-time great player and championship aspirations.
