Funding to upgrade remote airstrips across Western Australia, including the long-awaited sealing of a flood-prone runway in Eucla on the Nullarbor, has been announced as part of a $29.3 million plan.
The government revealed plans to allocate $21.3 million for the enhancement of regional airstrips in Eucla, Carnarvon, Onslow, Albany, and an unnamed airstrip in the East Kimberley. Additionally, $8 million will be allocated to the Aboriginal Community Airstrip Renewal Program.
The Eucla airstrip upgrade, in particular, is anticipated to be a significant improvement for the local community and the numerous travelers who navigate the Nullarbor each year. The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has faced challenges using the airstrip for emergency evacuations in the past due to its condition.
Laurene Bonza, president of the Shire of Dundas, expressed gratitude for the allocated funding after years of lobbying efforts. The council has committed $500,000 of in-kind support to the project, which aims to seal the 1,200-meter runway. Bonza estimated that the sealing process could be completed within 12 months.
The upgraded infrastructure is expected to benefit various stakeholders, including emergency services and the proposed Western Green Energy Hub. Despite the potential contribution of the renewable energy project to the funding decision, Bonza emphasized the necessity of the airstrip upgrade for the safety and well-being of the community.
Simone Conklin, captain of the local emergency services, highlighted the challenges posed by the current condition of the airstrip, especially during inclement weather. She expressed relief at the prospect of improved access to medical services and emergency assistance for residents in need.
