Seattle’s Tactical Decision: Passing on Fautanu
Their decision was backed by insider knowledge, as former NFL running back and current Los Angeles Rams color analyst Maurice Jones-Drew revealed that the Rams also had their eye on Murphy with the 19th pick.
According to Jones-Drew, “I know the Rams were going to take Byron Murphy if you guys didn’t.”
While the Rams eventually chose Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse, Murphy’s potential fit with the team was undeniable. With star defensive tackle Aaron Donald retiring, Murphy could have filled the void as a disruptive force in the defensive front.
Jones-Drew even drew comparisons between Murphy and Donald, noting Murphy’s ability to penetrate the pocket and pressure quarterbacks, essential skills in today’s NFL where the guard position is not as strong.
Improving Seattle’s Defense
In addition to his pass-rushing prowess, Murphy is expected to bolster Seattle’s struggling run defense, which has ranked among the league’s worst for consecutive seasons.
