Re-signing to keep Liberty super-team intact, Jonquel Jones, hungry for a WNBA championship

Jonquel Jones, the WNBA’s reigning MVP, has decided to stick with the New York Liberty for another two years, aiming to keep the team’s strong lineup intact in pursuit of the franchise’s first-ever championship title. This news, reported by Jackie Powell of The Next on Wednesday, reveals that Jones has signed a multi-year deal, solidifying her commitment to both the team and the city.

Standing at 6-foot-6, Jones made a remarkable impact in her debut season with the Liberty, averaging 11.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Her stellar performance even earned her the Commissioner’s Cup MVP award during the Liberty’s victorious campaign. Despite being an unrestricted free agent, Jones had expressed her desire to stay in New York during her exit interview, emphasizing her eagerness to contribute to the team’s championship aspirations.

Jones’ decision to re-sign is a significant boost for the Liberty as they look to build on their recent success and vie for the WNBA title. With fellow MVP Breanna Stewart also on board, along with key players like Courtney Vandersloot, Betnijah Laney, and Sabrina Ionescu, the team boasts a formidable lineup poised for another strong season.

While the details of the contract are still being finalized, Jones’ commitment underscores her determination to chase a championship after experiencing three previous Finals losses with the Connecticut Sun. Her move to New York last offseason played a pivotal role in GM Jonathan Kolb’s efforts to assemble a super-team through free agency, and Jones’ impact on the court has been undeniable.

Despite facing challenges, including an early-season foot injury, Jones has consistently delivered for the Liberty, showcasing her versatility and leadership. With the entire starting lineup set to return, the team appears primed for another deep playoff run, with Jones leading the charge towards championship glory.

The Liberty’s quest for their maiden title continues, with Jones firmly committed to the journey ahead. As the last original franchise yet to win a championship, the team’s hunger for success remains strong, and Jones’ decision to stay represents a significant step forward in their pursuit of glory.
