“Stereophonic and Hell’s Kitchen lead the 2024 Tony nominations.”

The Tony nominations this year are making waves, particularly with Alicia Keys’ musical “Hell’s Kitchen” and the 70s-themed music drama “Stereophonic” snagging a whopping 13 nods each.

“Hell’s Kitchen,” a musical that weaves Alicia Keys’ music into a semi-autobiographical tale of a New York teenage girl, is making waves with nominations including Best Musical and a nod for Maleah Joi Moon for Best Actress in a Musical. It’s competing against strong contenders like “Illinoise,” “The Outsiders,” “Suffs,” and “Water for Elephants.”

“Stereophonic” is captivating audiences with its story of a British-American band striving to record an album, earning praise from the Guardian’s Gloria Oladipo and leading the Best Play category. Stars Juliana Canfield and Sarah Pidgeon also scored nominations. It’s facing off against tough competitors like “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” “Mary Jane,” “Mother Play,” and “Prayer for the French Republic.”

Jeremy Strong, known for his role in “Succession,” might clinch his first Tony with a nomination for Leading Actor in a Play for “An Enemy of the People.” He’s in a tight race with talents like Liev Schreiber, William Jackson Harper, Leslie Odom Jr., and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Rachel McAdams is making her Broadway debut in “Mary Jane” and is vying for Leading Actress in a Play against seasoned performers like Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson.

Eddie Redmayne, fresh off an Olivier win, is nominated for Leading Actor in a Musical for “Cabaret” despite mixed reviews. His competition includes Brody Grant, Jonathan Groff, Brian D’Arcy James, and Dorian Harewood.

Gayle Rankin, Redmayne’s co-star, is also nominated for Leading Actress in a Musical, alongside contenders like Maleah Joi Moon and Eden Espinosa.

Nominations also went out to Corey Stoll, Jim Parsons, Daniel Radcliffe, and Bebe Neuwirth, among others.

David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s original score for “Here Lies Love” is also in the running.

Some notable omissions include Steve Carell, Alfred Molina, and Laurie Metcalf.

Excitement is building for the 77th Annual Tony Awards on June 16, hosted by Ariana DeBose.
