Celebrities gathered at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday evening for the annual Met Gala, a lavish event aimed at raising funds for the museum’s Costume Institute. Joining Anna Wintour as co-chairs this year were Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth.
The theme for this year’s gala was “The Garden of Time,” drawing inspiration from J.G. Ballard’s dystopian short story of the same name, published in 1962. The red carpet showcased a plethora of floral and botanical motifs, along with imaginative interpretations of decay and ruin.
Designer Harris Reed accompanied Demi Moore on the carpet, revealing that her gown, adorned with 11,000 hours of silk embroidery, was crafted from vintage wallpaper. He described it as a Victorian-inspired concept of Moore blossoming amidst thorns, resembling a stunning flower in full bloom.
Lana Del Rey’s custom Alexander McQueen dress resembled the overgrowth of a garden, featuring hand-embroidered bronze-colored branches inspired by the sculptures of Alberto Giacometti. Elle Fanning’s sheer Balmain gown showcased sleeves seemingly drawn up by birds, crafted from resin to achieve a glass-like effect. Janelle Monae’s shell-sequined dress and Greta Lee’s transparent lace gown also paid homage to the delicate beauty of flowers depicted in the story.
Among the men making bold fashion statements were model Wisdom Kaye, donning a head-to-toe red floral ensemble with burnt edges, and Bad Bunny, dressed in a custom Maison Margiela outfit complemented by a dramatic hat. Jeff Goldblum embraced the role of a character from the story, adding a touch of whimsy with dark green-tinted sunglasses, reminiscent of the Emerald City from “Wicked,” a production he’s set to star in later this year.
