Huntsville officials and community members gathered to mark the grand opening of the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex at John Hunt Park, a newly expanded sports facility with top-notch amenities. The complex features four championship multi-use fields, NCAA-approved lighting, digital scoreboards, two press boxes, locker rooms, sound systems, plaza areas with shade sails and picnic spots, expanded parking, and stadium seating for up to 5,000 sports fans.
“This amazing facility wouldn’t have been possible without the vision and leadership of former Huntsville Mayor Loretta Spencer,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “We’re proud to name this complex in her honor, recognizing her dedication to youth sports in Huntsville.”
Covering 20 acres, the four-field complex caters to a variety of sports, including soccer, lacrosse, and ultimate frisbee. Two of the fields have synthetic turf, while the other two are natural grass, offering flexibility alongside the eight synthetic turf fields at nearby Merrimack Sports Complex.
With a $17 million expansion budget, the facility is designed to host state, regional, and national tournaments, but it also welcomes local teams. “The whole idea behind John Hunt Park is to create world-class sports facilities that can serve both championship-level events and local sports communities,” said Gossett, a park representative. “We’re already seeing Huntsville sports teams signing up to use the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex, and we’re excited to see them enjoy the new fields.”
