The Rolling Stones’ age-defying 2024 Jazz Fest show went ‘from old to new’ with Irma Thomas

At the 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Rolling Stones delivered a tour de force performance that marked a significant moment in their storied career. Their two-hour set, comprising 18 songs, showcased the band’s timeless energy and musical prowess, creating an unforgettable experience for the audience.

This performance held special significance as it coincided with two significant anniversaries. Exactly five years prior, the Rolling Stones were scheduled to perform at Jazz Fest’s 50th anniversary but had to cancel due to Mick Jagger’s heart surgery. Now, they returned to the stage to fulfill that promise, much to Jagger’s delight as he exclaimed, “We finally made it!”

Additionally, this performance marked 60 years since the band adapted Irma Thomas’ arrangement of “Time Is On My Side,” their first Top 10 American hit. In a historic moment, Thomas joined them on stage to perform the song together for the first time, underscoring the profound impact of their collaboration.

The significance of Thomas sharing the stage with the Stones was not lost on music enthusiasts. It highlighted a pivotal moment in music history, bridging the gap between the British Invasion and American rhythm & blues. Jagger’s acknowledgment of this during the performance added depth to the occasion.

The Jazz Fest crowd witnessed this historic moment, with ticket sales reportedly capped at 40,000, marking the first sellout in Jazz Fest history. Despite the large audience, the festival’s improved crowd management techniques ensured a smooth experience for attendees.

The Stones’ performance was characterized by their trademark energy and charisma. Jagger, now 80, proved he still had the moves and voice to command the stage. The setlist ranged from classic hits like “Start Me Up” to tracks from their acclaimed 2023 album “Hackney Diamonds,” showcasing their enduring relevance.

Notable moments included collaborations with local musicians like zydeco bandleader Dwayne Dopsie and New Orleans native Chanel Haynes, who delivered standout performances alongside the band. The encore, featuring “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” left the audience thoroughly satisfied.

Overall, the Rolling Stones’ performance at Jazz Fest exemplified their status as rock icons and demonstrated their ability to captivate audiences across generations. It was a fitting tribute to their legacy and a testament to the enduring power of their music.
