The Minnesota Twins made a roster move today, placing outfielder Byron Buxton on the 10-day injured list due to right knee inflammation. In a corresponding move, infielder/outfielder Austin Martin has been recalled. The news was first reported by Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Buxton exited Wednesday’s game after experiencing discomfort while attempting to steal second base. Initially described as right knee soreness, further evaluation via MRI revealed no structural damage. President of baseball operations Derek Falvey expressed optimism, suggesting Buxton could return after the 10-day stint on the injured list.
Despite the team’s efforts to downplay the severity of the injury, concerns linger among fans due to Buxton’s history of health issues. Since his debut in 2015, the talented outfielder has struggled to stay on the field, playing more than 92 games in a season only once, back in 2017.
Last year, Buxton appeared in 85 games but was limited to designated hitter duties due to ongoing knee problems. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in October but aimed to return to center field for the 2024 season. Although he has started in 20 games in center field this year, his offensive production has not reached peak levels, with a batting line of .250/.300/.391 and a wRC+ of 99.
From 2019 to 2022, Buxton showcased his potential as an impact player, batting .258/.316/.558 with a 135 wRC+, along with stellar defense in center field. Despite multiple stints on the injured list during that period, he demonstrated his value when healthy.
While the hope is for Buxton’s swift return and improved performance, the Twins will rely on alternative options in center field in his absence. Willi Castro, Manuel Margot, and Austin Martin are among the candidates to fill the void.
