US revokes licences for supply of chips to China’s Huawei.

The Biden administration has taken a significant step by revoking export licenses that allowed Intel and Qualcomm to supply semiconductors to Huawei, intensifying pressure on the Chinese telecoms giant.

According to sources familiar with the matter, this move by the US Department of Commerce impacts the supply of chips for Huawei’s laptops and mobile phones.

While the commerce department confirmed the revocation of certain licenses for exports to Huawei, it did not specify which US companies would be affected.

A spokesperson for the department stated that they continuously reassess export controls to protect national security and foreign policy interests, considering the evolving threat environment and technological landscape.

This decision follows existing tough restrictions on US technology sales to Huawei, with Republican lawmakers urging President Biden to take stronger action against the company, citing concerns about its alleged involvement in cyber espionage.

Meghan Harris, an export control expert, described the move as a clear indication of the US government’s seriousness in addressing national security threats from Chinese technology.

Amid growing US concerns, Huawei has demonstrated its capability to develop advanced chips despite previous export controls. Lawmakers have raised alarm over reports of Huawei using chips from US companies in its products, urging stricter measures against the company.

Intel, one of the companies affected by the export license revocation, emphasized compliance with laws and regulations. Meanwhile, Michael McCaul, a Republican congressman, has advocated for a tougher stance on Huawei’s access to US technology.

Responding to the move, Senator Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of proactive measures to deny critical technologies to Chinese companies, highlighting the need for vigilance against potential threats.

Last month, the Financial Times reported on US efforts to persuade allies to tighten restrictions on chip-related technology exports to China, reflecting growing apprehension about Huawei’s activities.

In response, the Chinese embassy in Washington criticized the move as economic bullying, warning against disruptions to global economic and trading order.

Requests for comment from Qualcomm and Huawei went unanswered, while Intel declined to provide a statement.
