Iowa residents face some of the highest internet prices compared to other states, according to a study by High Speed Internet. While over 92% of Iowa households own a computer, only about 86% have subscribed to broadband internet, as per 2020 Census data.
Broadband refers to high-speed internet access, crucial for activities like videoconferencing and telehealth. These services necessitate rapid data transmission, especially important for rural healthcare providers.
In terms of speed, internet service is considered fast or “advanced” at 25 Mbps and above, according to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This speed can accommodate multiple users or devices simultaneously, although more devices connected can slow it down. On average, U.S. households pay $74.17 monthly for internet services with varying speeds.
In Iowa, the cost of internet access is notably high, ranking eighth in the nation for expense in 2024. The average Iowan pays $75.86 for a median download speed of 62.12 Mbps, equating to $1.22 per Mbps. In contrast, the ten states with the most affordable internet pay between 61 and 72 cents per Mbps.
The study indicates that rural residents often face higher costs for slower internet speeds compared to urban counterparts. Efforts to bridge this gap have been ongoing, with both state and federal funding allocated to improve internet infrastructure. In 2023, Iowa received over $150 million in federal grants aimed at enhancing reliable internet access across the state.
