After Seeing OpenAI’s Sora, Tyler Perry Puts $800M Studio Expansion on Hold: “Jobs Are Going to Be Lost”

Tyler Perry, a well-known actor, filmmaker, and studio owner, is sounding the alarm about the profound impact of emerging AI technologies on the entertainment industry. Perry, who had been planning a massive $800 million expansion of his studio in Atlanta, has put those plans on indefinite hold due to the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly highlighted by OpenAI’s text-to-video model called Sora.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Perry expressed astonishment at the capabilities demonstrated by Sora, which can generate cinematic-quality video outputs from simple text inputs. He acknowledged the potential opportunities that AI presents for streamlining production processes but also voiced concerns about its potential to disrupt traditional labor roles in the industry.

Perry emphasized that AI’s rapid development has significant implications for various sectors within the entertainment industry, including actors, crew members, and post-production professionals.
