When a toddler claimed to have spotted “monsters” in her closet, her parents never imagined the surprising truth: over 50,000 bees had made a hive there. Living in North Carolina, Ashley Massis Class, a mother of three toddlers, and her husband were puzzled by a few bees flying into their attic. Their investigation led to a shocking discovery inside the wall of their daughter’s room, where the bees had established a massive hive over eight months.
Initially, Massis Class feared the worst, thinking it might be something sinister. However, upon consultation with a pest control company and beekeepers, they realized the truth. Using a thermal camera, they located the hive and witnessed a horror movie-like scene as bees swarmed out when the wall was breached.
The beekeepers undertook several extractions, removing tens of thousands of bees and a honeycomb weighing over 100lb. Fortunately, the bees were relocated to a sanctuary. Massis Class shared her ordeal on TikTok, where it went viral.
Following the removal, Massis Class reassured her daughter, who had been convinced of the monsters’ presence. They now believed her, as their home underwent repairs due to the $20,000 worth of damage caused by the bees to electrical wires. Although their homeowner’s insurance didn’t cover the damage, the timing of the incident coincided with Massis Class and her husband being on leave for the birth of their new baby.
While grateful for the opportunity to address the situation, Massis Class admitted the experience was both terrifying and surreal, particularly hearing the ominous hum of bees from behind closed doors.
