United Airlines has announced an increase in baggage fees, following similar moves by American Airlines and JetBlue. According to a statement provided to Fox News Digital, United Airlines will be raising checked bag fees for travelers flying within North America. Economy class passengers on domestic flights with United Airlines will now pay an additional $5, bringing the cost of their first checked bag to $40.
Additionally, the fee for a second checked bag will increase to $45 if paid for in advance online, or $50 if paid at the airport. This change will apply to tickets purchased on or after Saturday, February 24. United Airlines emphasized that this is the first time they have raised bag fees in four years.
However, United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military personnel, and customers traveling in premium cabins will still be able to check a bag for free. The airline also mentioned plans to upgrade all of their mainline aircraft with larger bins to accommodate more carry-on luggage.
This announcement comes after other major airlines like American Airlines, Alaska Air, and JetBlue recently increased their baggage fees. According to a report by IdeaWorks Co. and CarTrawler, the top 20 global airlines generated over $33 billion in revenue from bag fees last year. Baggage fees are an important source of additional revenue for airlines, helping them cover various operational costs.
In 2023, these fees accounted for approximately 4.1% of total global airline revenue, marking a 15% increase from the previous year’s $29 billion revenue.
