MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — Mesa County Commissioners received a presentation covering crime statistics from 2008 to 2023. The presentation, given by Mesa County Sheriff Todd Rowell and District Attorney Dan Rubinstein, revealed that crime rates in Mesa County have been relatively stable compared to those in the Front Range. However, the data showed an uptick in fraud reports.
One of the graphs presented displayed a noticeable drop in crime filings in 2008. DA Rubinstein clarified that this decline occurred because the financial crisis caused them to lay off about a quarter of the law enforcement workforce.
At the end of their presentation, Rowell and Rubinstein emphasized that despite media reports suggesting a significant rise in crime rates, this is not what they observe locally in Mesa County.
