Michigan State women’s basketball completes ‘really special’ sweep against Michigan

Michigan State women’s basketball notched a significant win against Michigan, securing a sweep in their rivalry showdown with a hard-fought 70-66 victory at Crisler Center. It marked a special moment for first-year coach Robyn Fralick, who grew up immersed in the rivalry and guided her team to a memorable triumph.

The game was far from easy, with Michigan State having to weather a late surge from Michigan to clinch the win. Despite the pressure, the Spartans kept their cool and executed crucial plays down the stretch, sealing the sweep and improving their overall record to 18-7. On the flip side, Michigan faces an uphill battle to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament, needing strong performances in their remaining games and the Big Ten Tournament.

Key players for Michigan State included freshman Tory Ozment, who led the team with 16 points, along with DeeDee Hagemann, who contributed 14 points. For Michigan, Laila Phelia led the charge with 23 points, supported by Jordan Hobbs and Elissa Brett.

The game witnessed momentum swings, with both teams enjoying periods of dominance. However, it was Michigan State’s resilience and ability to stay composed under pressure that proved decisive. Despite facing adversity, including a late surge from Michigan, the Spartans maintained their poise and executed crucial plays when it mattered most.

Michigan’s shooting percentage fluctuated throughout the game, reflecting the ebb and flow of the contest. While they started strong in the first quarter, shooting an impressive 61.5%, they struggled to maintain consistency, particularly in the second and fourth quarters.

Coach Fralick praised her team’s speed and resilience for their ability to overcome challenges and regain momentum when needed. The victory underscored their character and determination, hallmarks of their season thus far.

Looking ahead, both teams recognize the significance of the rivalry matchup in shaping their postseason aspirations. While Michigan State enjoys a brief respite before their next game, Michigan will use the time to regroup and prepare for the challenges ahead.

Despite the toll of a demanding schedule, both teams remain focused on their ultimate goal of success in the postseason. As they navigate the final stretch of the season, they are determined to leave everything on the court and make their mark in the competitive landscape of college basketball
