US warns travelers about high crime at 2 popular cruise destinations, urges ‘extreme caution’

Looking forward to a tropical getaway in the Bahamas or Jamaica? Before you set sail, there’s important information from the U.S. State Department that you need to know, especially if you’re a fan of cruise line stops.

In a recent advisory dated January 26, the State Department raised concerns about the high crime rates in the Bahamas. The Level Two warning emphasizes the prevalence of violent crimes such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Travelers are urged to be extremely cautious, particularly when staying at short-term vacation rentals without private security.

The advisory includes practical advice like not opening doors at hotels or residences to unfamiliar visitors and not resisting physically during robbery attempts. These recommendations are meant to draw attention to the potential risks associated with crime in the Bahamas.

Likewise, Jamaica has also caught the State Department’s attention, prompting a Level 3 advisory issued on January 23. Travelers are advised to reconsider their plans due to the common occurrence of violent crimes, including home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides. Shockingly, even all-inclusive resorts are not immune to reported sexual assaults.

The advisory highlights challenges with the local law enforcement response to serious criminal incidents and the infrequent prosecution of cases. Travelers are strongly advised to avoid walking or driving at night, using public buses, visiting secluded places, or getting into situations that might attract unwanted attention. Resisting robbery attempts is also discouraged.

Beyond crime concerns, there are also issues with medical care. Public hospitals are reported to be under-resourced and unable to provide high-level or specialized care. Private hospitals often require upfront payment, posing potential challenges for travelers seeking medical assistance.

These advisories serve as a critical reminder for tourists to prioritize safety and exercise caution in these popular tropical destinations. By staying vigilant, adhering to safety guidelines, and staying informed about potential risks, travelers can make informed decisions to ensure a secure and enjoyable vacation experience.
